Traffic Calming

Manchester, Vermont

Memorial Avenue Speed Hump

The Town of Manchester, Vermont received a grant from the Vermont Agency of Transportation to install two speed humps in front of the Manchester Elementary School. The Town needed to protect the safety of students by reducing traffic speed along a segment of road used regularly by pedestrians and as a short cut for vehicular traffic. Dufresne & Associates, PC worked with VTrans and Jeff Williams, Town Highway Superintendent to prepare plans and specifications, bid the project and observe construction.

This project was one of two pilot projects by VTrans for installation of traffic calming speed humps throughout Vermont. According to local law enforcement the speed humps have reduced the traffic from an average of 30 mph to 15 mph in the calming area. The local police department performed a speed survey one year before the speed hump installation and during the same time period one year later, 2 months after the speed humps were installed.
