DESIGN/BUILD SWIMMING POOL FILTRATION SYSTEM

When the State of Vermont indicated they would not renew the discharge permit for the municipal pool,

Springfield officials had to move fast in order to offer the local kids a cool and safe place to swim. The State wanted to insure the Black River was protected from accidental spillage of chlorinated water from the 30-year-old diatomaceous earth filtration system. Springfield officials were concerned with the susceptibility to huge fines due to spillage of chlorinated water by less experienced summer employees.

Dufresne & Associates, PC completed a Basis of Design Report on March 27, 2001 and recommended the Town proceed using a design/build concept to meet the normal pool opening date of June 21, 2001. Investigation by D&A indicated minimum disinfection levels had not been maintained and the filtration equipment had not been removing pathogens and other disease causing organisms. The Town contracted with Dufresne & Associates to design and manage the construction including purchasing all equipment and services.

The preliminary estimated construction cost was $100,000 and the total project was completed for $93,700.

This project was completed on time and on budget for the annual pool opening of June 21, 2001.
